you may be thinking, 'azbats.com, you've just become enthralled by the idea of catholic worker-style christian anarchist jpv because you like anarky' and that's not true. did comics influence my politics. yes. but anarchism's promotion of horizontal organization rather than top-down hierarchies, the prioritization of freedom of the self in relation to the freedom of and care for others, and the added bonus of not taking a reconnection with faith away from him but strengthening it in a way that doesn't cross into zeal that is destructive or promote the view that he and azrael are god's 'smiling sword' would be really good for him. also leslie, who he loves to death and who is actively trying to push him towards community service as an outlet for his need to feel useful, was based off of dorothy day and named after peter maurin. so.
#this shit aint nothin to me man#no but seriously and i have plenty of criticisms towards leslie's approach to jp and azrael in that i think she promoted some very#unhealthy views in jp regarding azrael that wouldnt have ever worked because she didnt acknowledge jp's anger as being separate from azrael#in a sense and didnt acknowledge and tackle where that need to feel useful CAME from#BUT. she also helped them very much in other ways. SO.

Quote
Personalism is a philosophic tendency built on the infinite uniqueness and depth of each person. Over the years people like Walt Whitman, Martin Luther King, William James, Peter Maurin and Wojtyla (who went on to become Pope John Paul II) have called themselves personalists, but the movement is still something of a philosophic nub. It’s not exactly famous. Personalism starts by drawing a line between humans and other animals. Your dog is great, but there is a depth, complexity and superabundance to each human personality that gives each person unique, infinite dignity. Despite what the achievement culture teaches, that dignity does not depend on what you do, how successful you are or whether your school calls you gifted. Infinite worth is inherent in being human. Every human encounter is a meeting of equals. Doing community service isn’t about saving the poor; it’s a meeting of absolute equals as both seek to change and grow.

DOROTHY DAY // JOURNALIST
“She was an American journalist, social activist and anarchist who, after a bohemian youth, became a Catholic without abandoning her social and anarchist activism. She was perhaps the best-known political radical among American Catholics. In 1917 she was imprisoned as a member of suffragist Alice Paul's nonviolent Silent Sentinels. In the 1930s, Day worked closely with fellow activist Peter Maurin to establish the Catholic Worker Movement, a pacifist movement that combines direct aid for the poor and homeless with nonviolent direct action on their behalf. She practiced civil disobedience, which led to additional arrests in 1955, 1957, and in 1973 at the age of seventy-five.”

New York Catholic Workers bring new growth with rooftop garden
NEW YORK (RNS) — For decades the Catholic Worker movement has served meals at its two soup kitchens at Maryhouse and St. Joseph House in Manhattan’s East Village, feeding hungry New Yorkers from the thousands of pounds of fresh produce the workers grew at a farm in upstate New York named for the movement’s co-founder, Peter Maurin. Every fall, workers at the 49-acre farm in Marlboro, New York,…

DECEMBER, 2023/January, 2024
30th Anniversary Year

CATHOLIC WORKER

“Where Jacob Wrestled with
God!”
Journal of An Alien Street Priest:
Shores of A New Year!
As I stand on the shores of the Pacific, and look out into eternity I am reminded that all of us stand of the shores of a New Year. And I think of one who walks with us, St. Damien of Molokai, the Leper Priest!
St. Damien walked the shores of Molokai, remembering those with leprosy that he worked with, the past and present. Remembering his own call to these shores as a young boy.
As St. Damien looks out into the ocean he sees a thunderstorm forming and in his mind he wonders in his tiredness and doubt:
“I left the security of a sure ministry, of being provided for, and have wandered the shores into a ministry of uncertainty, anger, and danger of illness and physical harm” and as the wave roll in, ‘and have cast my heart into the wounded skies.”
Damien was a man of the morning fog, and of the late night blackness, a wake with ones’ in pain. Damien was the man who celebrates the Sacraments for all, seeing all as children of God. Damien was the man, who becomes afflicted with leprosy and in his suffering bears witness to his fellow brothers and sisters of how to die, with his hope in the resurrection.
Day in, day out, every time I walk outside my door, I see the “leper’s” of our society; people walk by as if they do not exist; I saw one well dressed drunk urinating on a sleeping homeless person; Sophia is 40 years old dying from cancer in a corner of an ally in dirty blankets; Sean gave up trying to get in a program of housing-there were five hundred ahead of him, many had been waiting for months. These are the “lepers” our society. Our mission is to walk with each one day after day, to listen, to provide comfort, and simply be present. We feed them, give them socks, provide rooms in a SRO when they are in need, visit them in jail, visit in the hospital, provide the Sacraments, and pastoral counseling. It is one by one, each day!
As we enter the coming year join me in the “morning fog”, and “the late night blackness” following the example of St. Damien, and of Jesus and in doing so “Our arms will become the love of God around our brothers and sisters (Dorothy Day). Deo Gratias! Thanks be to God!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In these four photos one can see the faces of our people and of my co-worker and me, two who live and survive on the street; the commandment of Jesus: “Do unto others as you would have done it unto me,” is a great equalizer, for it calls us to provide for others as we would like it “done unto us.” We meet others where they are without judgment, and questioning. Temenos Catholic Worker in your name meets Jerry, Sam, Paul and Susan listening, feeding, and most of all caring for them. We are not numbers, but their friend! So journey with me and our four friends, and many others on the streets, “The street transforms every ordinary day into a series of quick questions and every incorrect answer is a beat down, shooting or pregnancy. (Ta-Nehis:Contes).
We invite you to join us on the street this coming year.
We need food, socks, money for hotel rooms for the ill to recover, meds, and a variety of other needs, including administrative expenses. Our total budget is $325.000. which seems cheap compared to other non-profits. So join us in our Sacramental ministry of presence. Join us in caring for those who have very little access to regular services. Join us in being Christ! Peter Maurin, co-founder of the Catholic Word said:
“The Sermon on the Mount will be called practical when Christians make up their mindsl to practice it.”
I invite all of us to practice the Sermon on the Mount this Christmas and New Year!
